181 days. The Union Hochburg-Ach team had to wait this long for a win, but on Saturday the time had finally come. Captain Daniel Kain and his colleagues won away at TSU Handenberg 4:3 – but only at the last minute. The winning goal by Fabian Spitzwieser, who had won a penalty fifteen minutes earlier, only came in added time (92′). “If there are more games like this – and you almost have to assume that’s the case – I’ll either need a lot of valerian or an ambulance,” says coach Hannes Geieregger, who only took over the team on Thursday and is supposed to save them from relegation.
Not a new situation for Geieregger. He already “saved” St. Pantaleon a few seasons ago and only one season later became champion with this team. In a tricky situation, he also took over Eggelsberg-Moosdorf – and fixed the relegation with the club. “I got lucky a couple of times. That’s probably why Hochburger called me,” says Geieregger.
Trainer has been soft-boiled
Actually, the restaurateur who runs the Wirt z’Vormoos in Feldkirchen doesn’t have time to be a trainer. But goalie Daniel Kain, whom he knows from his time at Eggelsberg-Moosdorf, just didn’t let go with a few others. “That’s why I looked through my schedule for the next few weeks and then decided: Somehow it will work out.” But Geieregger is certain that his commitment at Hochburg-Ach will only last until the end of the season. “Then I have to leave the team again. Unfortunately, because I saw in the first training session that these guys have great potential. They just lack experience. That was also shown in the game in Handenberg. We conceded a disastrous goal to make it 1-1 and then kept making mistakes. This time, however, they fought their way out of the doldrums superbly,” says the happy coach, who of course was not uninvolved in the success himself. In the 68th minute he was substituted on by Fabian Spitzwieser, who took the penalty and then scored himself. “I had a lucky hand,” says the innkeeper.
After the sense of achievement in Handenberg, which was extensively celebrated after the long dry spell, the home game against third-placed Eberschwanger is on the program for the weekend. “Of course we have the hope that we will write. Basically, it almost doesn’t matter who we play against because we only have to concentrate on ourselves anyway. We have enough to do with ourselves – especially on the defensive. It just has to be more stable,” says Geieregger.
There’s still a long way to go before they stay up, but the new coach is confident that it won’t be another 181 days before the next win. “The boys are motivated and tear themselves apart on the pitch. And I have only one goal for the next few weeks: not to get off the bike. I even subordinate my job to it. At least for a while. Because when I tackle something, I do it 100 percent.”
