The 83-year-old German driver from Baden-Württemberg drove shortly before 10 p.m. on the A1, the west autobahn, as a “ghost driver” in the third lane in the direction of Salzburg. In the local area of St. Florian, he crashed sideways into the car of a 32-year-old from Linz. Both vehicles came to a standstill in the third lane in the opposite direction of travel. The two drivers suffered minor injuries in the accident and were taken to hospital. Alcohol tests were negative for both men. After consultation with the journal service of the Linz-Land district authority, the 83-year-old’s driver’s license was provisionally removed.
For the duration of the driver and vehicle recovery, the western autobahn was difficult to pass until 11:45 p.m. Luckily, there were few vehicles on the road at the time, police said.
