“Chile is always a country that knows how to appreciate challenges and now with a penetration rate of digital channels on retail sales of 13% of the total of what is sold to the final consumer in the main categories. The sustainability and cost effectiveness of this participation and its growth will be the focus in 2023 and, surely, they are going for much more since the recovery of double-digit growth will cause a higher penetration than in certain categories it will be 30% in 2024″, he stated Marcos Pueyrredon, president of the eCommerce Institute and coFounder & Global Executive SVP of VTEX.
The Chilean digital ecosystem remains active despite the slowdown observed since mid-2022, with an average of 13% due to the return of face-to-face, physical sales, the global inflationary impactthe increase in interest rates and the decrease in emergency subsidies and pension withdrawals.
In 2020, the online trade of goods in Chile doubled, in 2021, combining goods and services, sales for the first time touched 12,000 million dollars and e-commerce consolidated its double-digit share of total sales. Last year, as a result of the country’s condition and the post-strong growth adjustment, online sales of goods had their first setback in history, but those of services managed to recover at rates of even 90%.
