The latest inflation data for National Statistics Institute (INE) showed, for the first time in seven months, an increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) YoY, which went to 7.6% In April, the monthly variation was 0.75% in general, although some increases in specific products and services were felt more in the pockets of Uruguayans.
Between the items that increased the most last month food and non-alcoholic beverages stood out particularly. They are followed by personal care, social protection and various goods; Clothes and shoes; alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics; and restaurants accommodation services.
What was the increase in each item?
the item Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages had an increase of 1.93%, the division that in turn represents the greatest incidence in the variation of the index in general, with an incidence of 0.5133. So far this year the increase was 8.1% and if the last 12 months are taken into account, 13.07%.
The vegetables, tubers and legumes showed the most important rises, from 6.7% on average, with brown (33.79%), tomatoes (26.95%) and carrots (20.90%) as the most outstanding. So did to a large extent fruits and nutswhich on average increased 5.32%, with specific cases such as apples (19.38%) and oranges (6.22%) above her.
The rise in this type of product was strongly influenced in recent months by the effects of the drought, that generates direct problems in the production of many of these foods. In some cases, the government even encourages imports to guarantee supply in the gondolas.
The milk and other dairy products saw increases of 2.66%, while the eggs increased by 10.11% in the context of concern about the bird flu and its spread throughout the country. Also the subheading of the meat increased a 0.78%, with particularly large increases in the sheep meat (4.62%) and the pork loin and pulp (3.69%).
On the other hand, the sector of living place also had a considerable rise, from 0.23%, mainly due to the increase in rentals during April (+0.46%). The rest of the items also increased, such as Personal care, social protection and miscellaneous goods (1.07%), the one of Clothing and footwear (0.88%), the one of Alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics (0.5%), the one of Restaurants and Accommodation Services (0.48%), the one of Recreation, sport and culture (0.35%) and the one of Transportation (0.32%).
On the other hand, there were some specific products that were down during April, as lemons (-15.38%), the tangerines (7.58%), the chard (-7.98%), the lettuce (-3.64%), the sunflower oil (-4.41%) and the bone-in chicken cuts (-1.81%).
