Paraguayan Police Arrest Opposition Candidate Cubas After Post-Election Incidents

ASUNCIÓN, May 5 (Reuters) – Paraguayan police detained opposition politician Paraguayo Cubas, the third most voted presidential candidate in the weekend’s elections, on Friday after his supporters protested in front of the electoral court demanding a recount of votes .

Cubas, a leader from the east of the country who declares himself an anarchist and obtained a surprising 23% of the votes in the elections, was arrested in the last leg of an announced trip to Asunción to demonstrate in front of the electoral court against the results.

The police said on Twitter that his detention was preventive, in compliance with an order from the Public Ministry, without giving further details.

“Now you can see then that I am already being imprisoned (…) all the criminals in this country have to be handcuffed, just like Paraguayo Cubas,” Cubas said in a video posted online before peacefully getting into a patrol car that took him. led to his place of confinement.

On Monday night, Cubas’s followers closed roads throughout the country and clashed with the police around the electoral court where the authorities were judging the tally sheets. The politician announced new demonstrations after his arrival in the capital.

The electoral court declared the official Santiago Peña the winner with 43% of the votes. Cubas, who proposed to dissolve Congress and govern with the Armed Forces, won five seats in the Senate and four in the Chamber of Deputies.
