The army said it carried out a raid to detain individuals suspected of carrying out a shooting attack on Israelis earlier this week.
“The two armed men were shot dead after trying to flee the scene,” an Israeli army statement said.
Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip and has a strong presence in the West Bank, said the men were members of one of the group’s militant branches. According to the statement, they had participated in an armed struggle against the Israeli army.
The Palestinian Health Ministry said both men were 22 years old and died from gunshot wounds to the chest, neck and abdomen.
The incident followed an exchange of cross-border attacks between Israel and Gaza this week. (Reporting by Emily Rose, Ali Sawafta. Editing in Spanish by Javier Leira)
