“At eye level with Hohensalzburg Fortress”: The Salzburg branch of the Hamburg real estate agent Engel & Völkers is currently advertising a luxury property on its website.

The building is the Freyschlössl, which partly dates back to the 13th century and whose property includes parts of the old Salzburg city fortifications. The system is being offered for sale for a rumored 26 million euros.

Expensively renovated in 2009

The seller is the Imlau Foundation of the Kaindl timber industry family in Salzburg. The family bought the historic building in 2009 and completely renovated it. The refurbishment in 2009 turned out to be expensive due to the strict requirements of monument protection. There was hardly an area that wasn’t painted, paneled or decorated with tapestries, wallpaper or pictures. The first sales intentions were already in 2014.

The property covers 13,456 square meters, 289 square meters were built. 870 square meters of living and usable space are available, there are twelve rooms. A building ensemble consisting of cube, tower, half-timbered building, outbuilding and “Tyrnitz” (dining room or common room) stands on the site and is framed by gardens and forest areas.

Inside, the old has been combined with the new. Glass surfaces flood rooms with light. There is also a garden house with 47 square meters on the property. The facility is under monument protection. Electricity is supplied via its own transformer station. The heating was also renewed, a geothermal heat pump is the basis.

The Freyschlössl goes back to a defense tower (red tower) that was probably built at the end of the 13th century to secure the saddle between Mönchsberg and Festungsberg. The complex was bought in 1862 by the Salzburg merchant Carl von Frey. He had it rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style. The building remained in the family until it was sold in 2009 – hence the name Freyschlössl.
