Cabildo Abierto will announce if it leaves the government coalition

The Political Table of Open Town Hall (CA) will meet this afternoon to decide if it continues to be part of the ruling coalition or if it breaks with it after the president Luis Lacalle Pou demand the resignation of Irene Moreirauntil Friday Minister of Housing and Territorial Planning and who is the wife of the cabildante leader, Guido Manini Rios.

The Cabildo Abierto will communicate its decision at the end of the day, around 7:00 p.m., giving the government the possibility that, during the day, it made some gesture to stop its departure, which would leave the Executive in a fragile position in the Parliament. He would have a slim majority if CA continued to support his projects. Opposite casewould be in the minority.

Meanwhile, the position in front of the Ministry of Housing remains vacant. The lobbyists refused to name a successor to Moreira, precisely because they will first analyze his continuity in the coalition, while the Executive chose to wait for that outcome before considering names.

How did an imminent break between the Cabildo Abierto and the government come about?

On Friday, the Executive let it be known in the media that the president had demanded Moreira’s resignation for the discretionary delivery of a house to a Cabildo Abierto militant.

Immediately, the leadership of the party reacted with anger and that same day at noon a press conference was organized in which Guido Manini Ríos gave an ultimatum to the president of the Republic to review the request for his wife’s resignation.

The statements were in a harsh tone, accusing the government of intentionally attacking force. “Able There are other things that they want to charge to Cabildo Abierto“said the senator, whose relationship with Luis Lacalle Pou was eroded after the discussion of the social security reform. “Maybe the time has come,” he replied when asked if a break would be considered.

Minutes later, the president picked up the glove and contacted Irene Moreira by telephone to ratify her request for resignation, something that happened on Saturday.

If Cabildo Abierto leaves the ruling party, the coalition (National, Colorado, Independent and People’s parties) would lose 3 senators, 11 deputies and would have to name more than 50 positions in the Executive that are currently held by lobbyists.
