“Then you can talk to people anywhere in the world without having to give them your phone number,” the billionaire wrote in a message. In addition, private direct messages would be encrypted.

The functions of Twitter are thus further approaching those of services such as Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, which belong to the meta group. Another entry in which he described the messaging service WhatsApp as “untrustworthy” showed that Musk apparently wants to compete more with Meta in the future. Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion last year.

Inactive accounts deleted

There is another innovation on the platform: the short message service will delete accounts on a large scale that have not been active at all for several years. The follower numbers are likely to decrease as a result. The profile names of the deleted accounts would be available again, Musk emphasized. There was initially no information on how many years of inactivity the accounts should be removed.

According to Twitter’s previous rules, users even have to log in at least once every 30 days so that their accounts are not considered inactive. The interpretation of the pending deletion would therefore be more generous.
