“We need your help to bring Tesla to Uruguay!”, wrote Orlando DovatPresident of zonamericaon Twitter raving about the billionaire Elon Muskfounder of electric car maker.

“I am a proud Uruguayan driving a Tesla S90, as the first owner of an electric car in Uruguay. I became a leader in introducing Tesla to the country. Now, there are more than 200 Teslas circulating in Montevideo”, affirmed Dovat, who in a second tweet highlighted the existence of “a growing community of electric car drivers here”.

Zonamerica is one of the free zones that operate in Uruguay, focused on technology. The activity of the 500 companies installed on its campus is responsible for the 40% of total exports from free zoneswhich represents 1.8% of the national GDP.

Immediately, Dovat’s tweets asking Elon Musk to consider installing Tesla in Uruguay generated all kinds of reactions on Twitter, including the suggestion that it be installed precisely in its free zone.

At the moment, the only country in Latin America where Tesla has a presence is Mexicowhere there are stores and superchargers of the American manufacturer.

The consumption of electric cars in Uruguay is increasing. The sale of electric vehicles increased by 90.33% in 2022 Compared to 2021, according to the Automotive Trade Association (ACAU). In the breakdown by segments, cars of this type were the ones that increased the most by 153.63%.

Recently, the state energy company joint venture announced an investment of 5.5 million dollars in 124 new electric vehicle charging points throughout the country, 100 of them fast charging. The government’s objective this year is to densify the electric route and achieve a charging point every 50 kilometers for greater autonomy, the company assured.
