However, more than a third adapt their travel behavior to the rise in prices: they switch to the off-season, choose cheaper accommodation or travel destinations or only travel within Austria.
Nine percent of those surveyed have no plans to travel, 13 percent are still undecided according to the survey. The reason given most frequently is personal financial situation.
Half of the vacationers surveyed estimate a similar budget as usual, with young travelers under 30 in particular wanting to spend more money this year than usual. According to the survey, the average vacation budget for the summer of 2023 is around 1,070 euros per capita. A good fifth of those surveyed are planning to travel with a higher budget this year, and a fifth with less money. Older travelers over the age of 60 plan an above-average budget of a good 1,300 euros per person. Families with children, on the other hand, estimate significantly less than the average at around 800 euros per capita.
Dream destination is beach and sea
Most of those surveyed are drawn to the beach and the sea this summer. A quarter each would like to go on holiday at the lake, in the mountains and in the city. The most popular travel destinations are Italy, followed by Croatia and Germany. 42 percent of those surveyed are planning a holiday within Austria – Styria and Carinthia are particularly popular for holidays “at home”.
Some travelers are increasingly incorporating sustainability into their vacation plans. For more than a third of those surveyed, sustainability is a high priority when traveling. 41 percent of this group want to go on holiday by train or long-distance bus instead of by plane or car. 36 percent pay attention to sustainability when choosing a travel destination, 28 percent want to focus on sustainable measures when it comes to the type of accommodation and behavior on site. “Awareness of sustainability increases with age and solo travelers in particular pay more attention to making their vacation more sustainable,” says ÖAMTC travel expert Yvette Polasek.
