A right-wing extremist has planned an attack on the Volksstimmefest of the KPÖ in the Vienna Prater. This emerges from the recently published report by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The man has since been convicted of other crimes. The KPÖ does not understand why they were not informed about the corresponding plans. “We find it strange when we have to find out about such incidents via the intelligence report,” spokesman Günther Hopfgartner told Puls24.
The Ministry of the Interior told ORF Vienna on Tuesday that the man had been taken into custody after a house search in the summer of 2021 and had been legally sentenced according to the facts of the Prohibition Act and Section 283 of the Criminal Code (incitement). The person acted alone and the detention no longer posed a direct threat to the event. Nevertheless, the police took appropriate extended protective measures for the event.
According to media reports, “numerous weapons, Nazi memorabilia and explosives” were seized during the raid. The suspect, who has been well known in the scene for many years, is said to have already carried out “successful blasting exercises with self-made explosive devices”.
