The Municipality of Montevideo will deliver free bottled water to people at risk
The mayor of Montevideo, Caroline Cosse, announced at a press conference that, based on the study of the water in 15 polyclinics in the capital, and because in some points it exceeded the current OSE salinity parameters, the IM would be in charge of delivering bottles of mineral water to a public risk target. Given this, the Minister of Public Health (MSP), Karina Randoresponded that the MR measurements were made incorrectly.
The delivery will last, according to Cosse, as long as the measure of the Executive power for 45 days to raise the salinity of the water. “We understand that, to the population most exposed to this type of thing, the IM cannot look the other way. We are making a great effort. We are going to maintain this measure at least while the present exception authorized by the Executive Power is valid. for 45 days,” explained the departmental head at a press conference.
The measure reaches a target audience that is made up of infants under 6 months who need water to consume their nutritional supplements, and pregnant who suffer from blood pressure problemsas well as other adults with hypertension and kidney failure.
Results of studies in polyclinics
At the end of last month, the OSE board had taken the step of increase the amount of sodium in the fluid from 200 milligrams per liter to 280 mg/L, while from chloride they went from 280 mg/L to 450 mg/L. While last Friday, the MPS authorized a new increase in the measures, which will go to 400 mg/L and 700 mg/L, respectively.
Faced with this, Cosse had communicated that the water would be studied in 15 of the 26 polyclinics that the city owns to be able to account for the salinity of the water, and determine if it is drinkable or not. The mayor remarked that of the 15 points evaluated there is only one that does not exceed the established maximum limit of 200 mg/l. While, of the rest, there are two that exceed the exception authorized by the Executive Powerand double the upper limit at 440 mg/litre.
