The president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorwas in favor this Wednesday of carrying out a referendum to define whether the magistrates of the supreme court they must be directly elected by the citizens, in a new onslaught against the judiciary, which he calls “rotten”.
The members of the highest court of that country are renewed periodically at the proposal of the current ruler and after the approval of the candidacies in the Senate with two-thirds of votes.
“Hopefully the consultation will be carried out, that the people will be asked”the president responded in his daily conference to a question from a journalist about a proposal made on Sunday in this regard by the coordinator of the ruling Morena party in the Chamber of Deputies, Ignacio Mier.
Since before coming to power in December 2018 and already as president, Lopez Obrador It has promoted several popular consultations on controversial issues such as the suspension of the construction of a new airport for the capital or the possibility of presidents being tried.
“I think that the consultation helps, you just have to see the legal procedure”he said Wednesday. “If there is time and it is allowed by law, it would be good because people have to be informed and we all have to participate in cleaning up, in moralizing, in purifying public life,” he argued.
AMLO goes for constitutional reform
The ruler, known by the acronym AMLOannounced last week that before finishing his term in October 2024, he will present a constitutional reform project, in response to a decision of the supreme court to invalidate a series of legal changes to the electoral system.
The legislative modifications, approved by the Congress with an official majority and promoted by the president, were an alternative to another constitutional reform proposed by AMLO which failed in its attempt to reorganize and define the administrative tasks of the arbitrator of the elections, the INE.
“It can be proven that almost the entire judiciary, from top to bottom, is rotten, that it only serves the powerful and criminals, that it does not dispense justice for the benefit of the people”said the president.
