Will this goal be the nail in the coffin of SV Guntamatic Ried in the Bundesliga? After the 0:1 against the immediate relegation competitor Altach, the Innviertler need a small football miracle in the remaining two rounds to avert the third relegation from the Bundesliga.
The deficit to Vorarlberg is three points. In addition, there is the star in the table by rounding off the Altach points after the regular season – Ried would have to get four points more than the club from the Ländle to stay in the Bundesliga. That means: in the last two games against Hartberg and Wolfsberg, Ried will only be helped by wins.
For a long time it looked like a draw in yesterday’s game in the Josko Arena – up to the 83rd minute: Stefan Haudum headed in from a corner, the ball bounced off the crossbar onto David Ungar’s thigh and from there into the goal – 0:1 (83rd). But what went down completely for the time being: The decisive goal conceded might not have counted at all. Altach’s Lukas Jäger was in an offside position immediately in front of Ried goalkeeper Samuel Sahin-Radlinger when Haudums headed the ball, but according to referee Harald Lechner it was not a punishable offense.
However, OÖN has a video showing: Shortly before the Innviertler goalkeeper tries to defend himself, Altach kicker Radlinger, who is in an offside position, gets on his foot – which means a significant intervention in the game situation. All referees also confirm this when asked by OÖN: Irritating Jäger alone would probably not have been enough, since Radlinger had a clear view of what was happening. But since there was probably also contact with the Rieder goalie, the VAR referee Lechner should at least have brought him to the monitor. The situation is also clear for Ried coach Maximilian Senft: “When you give the ball away, the player stands directly in front of the goalkeeper and blocks him on the defence. That looks very much like offside to me.”
In principle, every goal is checked by the VAR – but it is often also due to the interpretation of the video referee how an action is judged. An Upper Austria referee says: “There were no protests from Ried on the pitch after the goal either. I can only explain it to myself that the VAR check of the goal in a hurry overlooked the offside or the punishable contact by Jäger . For Ried this is of course a catastrophe.”

Similar scene in Tyrol
Doubly curious: in the previous week, the Riedern were denied the goal for the supposed 2-1 winning goal in the 1-1 in Tyrol because of a similar situation after a VAR check: After a goal by Tin Plavotic in the 93rd minute, the Innviertler was already seen as a winner at the Innsbruck Tivoli, but after studying the video, the goal was denied due to Markus Lackner being offside.
The Ried defender had not touched the ball like Jäger yesterday, but the referee team still punished the action as a punishable offside, as Lackner went into the duel and the Tirol kicker could not clear the ball smoothly. Plavotic then scored – and would have put Ried in a top starting position before the game against Altach. But Ried’s nerves are also on edge because of yesterday’s controversial goal: “It’s a crucial scene. That probably fits the situation. If you lose like that, it’s bitter. It’s a difficult situation, but we’re definitely not going to be now give up. We have to keep going. We’ll give everything until the end,” says Ried’s sports director Thomas Reicheltshammer.
