The Intendancy of Canelones will fine the Pando Refrigerator for extracting water from the stream without authorization in the midst of the water crisis that affects all Uruguay but, particularly, to the metropolitan area in which the department is located.
Frigorífico Pando has permission to drink water at a specific point in the Pando Stream. The problem is that this part of the water course is without flow, affected by what is already considered the worst drought in the last century in the country. Because of this, the company he made a channel of about a thousand meters to extract the liquid from another point of the streamwhich was denounced by the neighbors.
For its part, and after being notified, the Mayor ordered the refrigerator to stop doing so and decided to fine it.
How was the procedure against El Frigorífico?
“The competent authority is dinagua and dynacea to whom we communicate immediately. Their procedures will run on their side. We already prepared our report. We already intimated the cessation and we are evaluating the fine to apply. By the land use law we have up to 50,000 Resettable Units (RU). So that we have a parameter, in San Ramon we apply a fine of 2,000 UR for sand extraction, which is equivalent to approximately 3,100,000 pesos,” said Francisco Legnani, Secretary General of the Canary Islands Administration.

Lagoons have formed and there they connect the pipes with the pumps, where the water runs out, they change it again to another place. They have made ditches. They take the water little by little. Upstream are the neighbors, they are farmers or ranchers and they have no water left, the problem comes from there,” said the mayor.
“Because of the drought, plus the extraction of water, the creek is practically drying up“, he concluded.
