On average, Austrians get around 20 percent more for their money on holidays abroad than at home and get out a little better than last year. “European destinations tended to be a little cheaper in 2023 compared to 2022, overseas destinations significantly cheaper,” says Stefan Bruckbauer, chief economist at UniCredit Bank Austria: He calculated the “holiday euro” like every year. The reasons for this are an appreciation of the euro and high inflation in Austria.
The cheaper euro exchange rate makes overseas destinations 17 percent cheaper on average compared to 2022. Some popular holiday destinations such as Hungary and Turkey have become more expensive. In a direct comparison, however, the “holiday euro” is still worth the most in Hungary, Croatia and Turkey. A euro is worth a little less in Great Britain and the USA than at home. Switzerland is particularly expensive.
The Bank Austria study compares the general price levels in different countries. The price of goods and services that are particularly popular with tourists can deviate from this, as can prices in the capital cities.
