The four-part series about the 85-year-old Bourbons, which is now available on Sky, is correspondingly explosive. “Juan Carlos – Love, Money, Betrayal” is a mixture of political thriller, business thriller and TV soap opera.
Juan Carlos was King of Spain for almost four decades. Back home, he was long considered a folk hero and the “savior of democracy” after he persuaded a putschist group to give up with a resolute speech in February 1981.
Corruption, hunting in Africa
Corruption affairs and, above all, an ominous elephant hunt in Africa led to his fall and ultimately to his abdication in favor of his son Felipe in 2014. Further scandals and financial misconduct also hit the retired king hard. Since the reputation of the royal family suffered as a result and calls for an abolition of the monarchy became louder, Juan Carlos left his homeland on August 3, 2020 in a proverbial cloak and dagger operation.
According to official reading, he did it voluntarily. In Spain, however, it is an open secret that he was sent into exile without any alternative.
