The Transportation Commission of the Parliament with him Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP), lead by Jose Luis Faleroexpressed their concern about the demands of the Municipality of Montevideo to the works of central railway, which are part of the plan PSU 2 to improve logistics costs.

In this sense, the deputy for the National Party, Daniel Martinezin an interview with Radio Carve, expressed the Municipality of Montevideo is requesting for the approval of the work a list of “more than 20 works that are of an important quantification” such as level crossings, elevators, tunnels and works related to the reformulation of the project.

The deputy described some works as “blackmail” since some works have to do with the framework of the urbanization. “The Municipality of Montevideo requests works that were not foreseen, like blackmail, to give permits for other works. It adds a cost that the State is not willing to be able to assume, ”said the deputy.

Martínez explained that there are some works claimed by the Municipality of Montevideo that are undergoing processes of expropriation of homes and businesses in order to comply with the work. The deputy remarked that he was “surprised and powerfully called his attention” that soon to finish the work – that it took 48 months to be carried out – the Municipality comes out with this type of claim.

In this sense, beyond the investment that it would require, Martínez said that the work is stipulated for the second half of December, but, if these requirements are met, the work would take much longer to complete. “Of course it would delay the delivery of the works, but not only that. It adds a cost to the Ministry of Transportation that the State is not in dispute to assume, ”explained the nationalist deputy.

The hopes of UPM 2, delayed

The Finnish company UPM has the work of the central railway to transport the pulp directly from its second plant to the Port of Montevideo. However, the restoration of the railway was postponed again and its inauguration is no longer expected in May, but only in October or November of this year, which raises the costs of its product.

The work cost the Finnish company 280 million dollars and it will allow it to take directly to the port terminal specialized in cellulose – inaugurated in October of last year -, which will lead to a reduction in costs and logistics time.
