54% of Uruguayans buy online

54% of people living in Uruguay make purchases of products and services online on a regular basis, and 66% have done so at least once, according to the latest report from Digital Consumption Trends of the Chamber of the Digital Economy of Uruguay (CEDU) and carried out by the consultant Figure.

digital consumption It grows all over the world and, of course, also in Uruguay. Above all, after the experience of the Covid-19 pandemic, where this type of buying and selling expanded rapidly as a safe and practical alternative for both merchants and consumers.

In this sense, the CEDU sought to update the Uruguayan digital consumer profile and, hand in hand with Cifra, carried out this new report. He himself points out that 54% of people in the country use the internet to purchase products and serviceswhile 31% use it to place orders and 25%, to pay for the different forms of transport.

One noteworthy piece of information is the growth in the adoption of digital commerce —or ecommerce— in the Uruguayan population: when asked if they had ever used the Internet to purchase products and services, the number of positive responses reached 66%. This percentage, in 2020, had been 53%.

Among the reasons mentioned for choosing this online purchase modality, 25% of those consulted responded that it is faster and more comfortable14% referred to the best prices compared to face-to-face purchases, 9% highlighted the variety of items and 4% assured that it is faster, while the remaining 3% said that they prefer to avoid moving to the physical location .

In any case, more than a quarter of consumers responded that they would buy more online if the Delivery time was faster. In this sense, a third of those consulted recognized that their online purchases would increase if it were easier to pay in dues, and 41% considered the same, but in case the return was easier.

Regarding payment methods, credit and debit cards —36% and 12%, respectively—, as well as collection networks (9%), are the most chosen when purchasing products and services online. .

Besides, the vast majority of purchases (88%) were made on Uruguayan sites. And the level of satisfaction after the ecommerce experience averaged a score of 9 for the national pages, on a scale from 1 to 10. The majority of those surveyed (82%) have as many or more expectations of consumption in this way for what they remainder of 2023.

New dates to promote digital consumption

The fact that 54% of the population buys online with some regularity encouraged the CEDU to create a new date to encourage and promote this type of trade: Digital Days

This new event will take place during one week per month, in six different months; and each edition will be dedicated to a specific item of which the adhered brands will be able to put offers, discounts and promotions within the official context of the dates.

The first time that Digital Days will take place will be next July, with a focus on the category Home. In August, the protagonist will be Trips, and in September, Beauty and health. For 2024, a date in February dedicated to Fashion, in March to Technology and in April to Entertainment.

“We are motivated by the interest in designing business strategies that promote ecommerce, an increasingly consolidated sector in the commercial sector. We are convinced that Digital Days will become days as long awaited by Uruguayans as the already traditional ones Cyber ​​Monday”, manifested Leonardo Alvarez, CEDU Secretary General, during the presentation of this new date for Uruguayan e-commerce.
