Shanghai Disneyland closes after detecting a case of Covid-19

Chinese authorities continue to pursue the zero contagion target adopting severe measures before the 92 new cases detected yesterday in the country, the highest figure since September.

Shanghai Disneyland closed after a woman visiting the park tested positive when she returned home to a neighboring province, the state press reported. The company said it would remain closed at least Monday and Tuesday to “follow up on pandemic prevention and control requirements.”

The park began on Sunday to test all visitors for covid-19 before leaving the enclosure. About 34,000 people were tested as of Monday morning, Shanghai Municipality said.

Images from state television showed health workers in protective suits inside Disneyland, while visitors with masks they waited under the fireworks of the castle of the park.

Meanwhile, the newly opened Universal Studios park in Beijing said on Saturday that detected close contacts of infected people among the visitors of the previous weekend.

All theme park staff tested negative to covid tests and no traces of the virus were detected at the site, the park noted. The Chinese authorities have shown no signs of loosening their strict zero covid policy.

Beijing will host the Winter Games in February, and authorities have said eradicating the virus is their biggest challenge in preparation. Currently there 6 million people confinedespecially in northern China.

Mi Feng, A spokesman for the National Health Commission said at a press conference on Saturday that authorities will maintain the “strict ban on people in confined communities leaving their homes.”

Beijing imposed on Saturday new control measures, like the closing of cinemas in a district.

In another part of the country, and after having registered two new cases on Sunday, the city of Harbin (Northeast), with 10 million inhabitants, confined two residential complexes, closed schools for a week and suspended interprovincial bus links.

A county in Hebei province (north), neighboring Beijing, also asked its 220,000 residents of stay home after a handful of new infections are discovered.
