At least nine people died and another 25 were injured this Saturday, as a result of a snow avalanche that occurred in a mountainous area of the province of Gilgit Baltistan, located in northern Pakistan.

According to the sub-inspector general of the Police in the area, Tuafil Mir, the rescue teams face great complications to access the place located in a remote area and steep terrain, reported Europa Press.
On the other hand, a spokesman for the tourism authorities confirmed to the DPA agency that the avalanche surprised a group of 34 people, made up of shepherds and their families.
According to sources, it is unknown if there are minors involved in the accident.
The chief minister of Gilgit Baltistan, Khalid Jursjid Jan, conveyed his regret for the death of the civilians and urged the emergency bodies to speed up the rescue operations, according to the newspaper ‘Dawn’.
Finally, the highest regional authority appealed to the Ministry of the Interior and the Gilgit Baltistan Disaster Management Authority to investigate the causes of the accident.
