Since 2016, the Austrian government has sought to transform the meaning of the birthplace of the Nazi dictator, used as a reference point for “extremist circles”.

The house where he was born and lived Adolph Hitler for a brief period it will be used for the defense of human rights: the Austrian police ordered the renovation of the building located in Braunau am Inn, a city on the border between Austria and Germany.

The works should start in autumn and end in 2025. For some time, the building, where Hitler’s family lived for a short period, was the center of a controversy over its use. The decision was made based on the recommendations of an interdisciplinary commission of experts concerned with deprive the property of its “mythical appeal to extremist circles”according to the ministry in a statement.

The points of view about the fate of the building where the most remembered genocide in history lived have their differences: while some intend to demolish the building forever and, in this way, eliminate a point of reference for Nazi groups, others assume that form a denial of the past in the country and all over the world.

The State, however, had already shown intentions to reform it in 2016: Gerlinde Pommer, former owner of the building, refused to change its appearance so that it would no longer be associated with the memory of the dictator. As of 2019 the Supreme Court ended the matter by rejecting Pommer’s appeal against the compensation of 812 thousand euros established by the expropriation of the property, which the woman considered inadequate.

What will be the fate of the building where Hitler was born?

The birth house was actually a rented apartment on the street Salzburger Vorstadt 15. This is located in a three-story building, painted in pastel yellow. After the Second World War it was recovered by the original owners of the house.
