On Saturday they had blocked a section of the A12 motorway for the seventh time not far from the seat of parliament and government in the Netherlands. With the action, the group “Extinction Rebellion” wanted to protest against the government’s policies. According to estimates, more than 3,000 people followed the call to participate.
According to the police, hundreds of demonstrators were removed from the street and taken to waiting buses. Some had chained themselves together. According to the ANP news agency, the police used water cannons to prevent the demonstrators from blocking the section of the motorway. The officials intervened earlier this time than in previous disruptive actions by “Extinction Rebellion”. The city administration of The Hague had previously warned the demonstrators that blocking the expressway was prohibited.
