A volcano entered into rash this saturday in Costa Rica and the populations close to the Pénjamo, Azufrada and Azul rivers are alert to the activity of gases in the north of the country.
The volcano, named Rincón de la Vieja, erupted on Thursday afternoon with a column of gases, ash and water raised to more than 3,000 meters highas reported by the National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency Attention.
The erupting phenomenon is located within the Rincón de la Vieja National Park, which is located 170 kilometers northwest of San José, the capital of the country. Frequently visited by local and foreign tourists, the authorities maintain internal surveillance during these hours in order to assess the situation after the eruption.
He geologist of the National Emergency Commission (CNE), Blas Sánchezrevealed the state of the volcano: “It is identified that there is a presence of water in the active crater and that allows for a large amount of steam in the eruptions.”
“El Rincón de la Vieja has been presenting frequent low-energy phreatic eruptions and eruptive plumes with heights of less than 1,000 meters, and several more energetic eruptions such as the one reported on Thursday,” added the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori).
A column of ash and gases
The National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency Care of Costa Rica (CNE) explained the eruption of the volcano that left a column of 3,000 meters composed of ash and gases: “A few minutes ago an eruption was generated in the Rincón de la Vieja volcano with a plume of water vapor, gases and ashes of 3000 meters “.
“This month the volcano has been in constant eruption. In the case of this latest eruption, there was an expulsion of material from the bottom of the main lake that will generate hot mud currents (lahars) towards the channels of the northern part,” he added.
The exact date and time of the eruption, according to the Costa Rican prevention agency, dates from May 25 at 2:35 p.m. Costa Rican hours.
