After the rescue of a dead hiker in Lower Austria on Saturday, the mountain rescue service announced more details on Sunday. According to a broadcast on May 1, the 45-year-old “disappeared without a trace”. On the holiday, the man set off on his annual tour to the Ötscher via Rauher Kamm. A day-long search ensued. According to the police, the body was finally discovered in the area of the Ötscher south side.
Large search without success
According to the Lower Austria/Vienna Mountain Rescue Service, 80 members were involved in the large-scale search by May 7th. The team was completed by ten alpine police officers and five officers from the standby unit, three police service dogs, 21 rescue dogs and two mountain rescue dogs. Drones and an air traffic police helicopter were also deployed. Due to the adverse conditions – in some areas of the Ötscher there was a high risk of avalanches – the campaign was finally temporarily suspended.
Buried by masses of snow
After an improvement as a result of the snowmelt, there was a continuation from Saturday morning. “Around 10.30 a.m. the man was found by a search team from the mountain rescue service about 400 meters below the exit of the Rauher Kammes,” it was announced. The 45-year-old is said to have swept away snow masses in a fall, from which he has now been released. The salvage in the rough and overgrown terrain was carried out in cooperation with the alpine and flight police.
