After a meeting at the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, Conaprole authorities and union representatives agreed to work on a “transitory proposal of operation”, with which, between Monday and Tuesday, they would put an end to the conflict that jeopardized the supply of milk in Uruguay.
The tripartite meeting had as its axis reformulating the working conditions in the UHT plant of Rodriguez and thus both parties reached an agreement of character “transient”. It is that the issues touched on in the labor portfolio will be evaluated on Monday, May 29 and the objective is that the agreement materializes on Tuesday the 30th.
The AOEC reported through a statement that, if the agreement is endorsed, “it would allow work to begin on Tuesday, May 30” and define a scope of negotiation with a period of 30 days, “trying to reach definitive agreements.”
It is within this framework that the union reported that the union measures, which jeopardized the supply of milk in Uruguay, remain on hold.
In a press conference after the meeting, the general secretary of AOEC, Luis Goichea, indicated that, if the agreement materialized, a number of workers would return to work at the UHT plant in Rodriguez, although he avoided providing further details about the agreement.
The president’s sayings about the conflict
President Luis Lacalle Pou referred to Conaprole conflict during his speech at the congress of the rural federation which took place in Peach and charged against the attitude of the Association of Workers and Employees of Conaprole (AOEC) assuring that he never saw anyone go on strike “because they have closed a tambo, as they have closed so many”.
Leading the closure of the Rural Federation congress, Lacalle Pou pointed out that “when you see what the reason for the conflict is, it’s incredible” and questioned the attitude of the employees when pointing out that “There are 12 or 15 that change places”, in reference to Conaprole’s investment in a packaging machine that implies changes in work shifts, although the company ruled out that they are sources of employment at risk.
The president stated that the company “is a flagship industry” of Uruguay and called to “find a solution.” “It’s a shame that something that is the pride of all Uruguayans ends like this,” he criticized, speaking of “an economic factor, but also a psychological one.”
The union conflict began after Conaprole invested in the Villa Rodríguez plant and incorporated new packaging machines, with the capacity to 15,000 liters per hour of long life milk. This led to The company will propose a rescheduling of shifts and the forms of work, something that the union opposed, as they considered that the changes were made without prior negotiation.
