The Association of Teachers of Uruguay (Ademu) carried out a 24-hour strike this Monday in rejection of “institutional violence” after the death of a teacher from the school 4 of Montevideo that suffered a decompensation and was transferred to a health center, where he died.
From the union they claim that they were denied the possibility of carrying out a reflection journeywithout students, after the death of the teacher last Thursday.
Faced with the strike, the president of the Codex, together with the interim director of Initial and Primary, Olga de las Heras, they held a press conference where they criticized the fact that thousands of children were left without their daily food. “Take responsibility for letting 25,000 children without food, with a situation that was attended. The unfortunate thing is that an unfortunate event such as the death of a teacher is taken to make demands and a strike,” Silva claimed.
On the other hand, he wanted to deny some statements by the union. “We regret that in the face of this sad fact the union has gone on strike, with things that are lies. It is not true that there was no accompaniment at the school, it is not true that today the professional teams were going to go at noon”, he remarked.
In this sense, Silva reported that this Monday professionals from the Enjoyable Schools program with the aim of containing children and teachers, after rejecting Ademu’s proposal to hold a day of reflection only with teachers. “Why only with the teachers? The idea was to generate a reflection with children, parents and teachers, ”she questioned.
On the other hand, he added that the team will perform tomorrow at school. “The team will go tomorrow (by Tuesday), with classes, there must be classes, what is the solution, that the children are alone and sad at home, and the parents working. What is intended?”, concluded the official.
