It should have been the culmination of their trip to Thailand: A trip to the dream beaches of Ko Phi Phi, where Leonardo Di Cabrio stood in front of the camera for “The Beach”, ended for two young Upper Austrians with broken ribs and bruises in a Thai hospital. How Romana W. from Pettenbach (Kirchdorf an der Krems district) told in an interview with Life-Radio that the speed boat the couple was traveling with had an accident on the way back from the popular island. At a speed of around 60 km/h, the boat with 37 people rammed a canal marker as it entered the harbour.

“We had more than just a guardian angel,” the Upper Austrian recalls the chaotic scenes: She was sitting with her partner outside the boat when the accident happened. The man realized the seriousness of the situation just in time and tore it down. “That definitely saved our lives,” says W. in an interview with Life Radio. The couple had to spend another week in a Thai hospital, but the two are now back home. “But the pictures will stay with us for a long time,” says W.. Listen to the entire live radio interview:
