In the past two years, the benchmark rents have risen by 14.4 percent, and by 2025 they could rise by a total of 28 percent. Momentum economist Alexander Huber called for the introduction of a rent control. SP vice club boss Jörg Leichtfried wants rents to be decoupled from inflation. VP club chairman August Wöginger, on the other hand, referred to measures already taken by the government that would have strengthened purchasing power.

As reported, the next increase (by 5.5 percent) in category rents is due in July. Wifo boss Gabriel Felbermayr is in favor of capping rent increases at two percent. The association of the real estate industry spoke of “scaremongering”: “Across Austria, around 75,000 households in private rental apartments are affected by a value protection of the category amounts, 40,000 in municipal apartments, a total of just over one percent of all households.” In many houses, the running costs would exceed the main rent.
