Volunteers are always welcome to lend a helping hand.
Andreas Pichler is active in the “WABE” workshop: Despite the visual impairment and impaired fine motor skills, the 51-year-old, who has been cared for at invita for 12 years, has found a meaningful job. He sorts doorstops and screws for an external company. He gets pocket money for his work.
WABE team leader Maria Pomarolli: “With us, everyone will find an opportunity to work according to their abilities – even if for some it means turning a crank. It’s about maintaining existing skills.” That is why WABE is not just about “work” in the classic sense, but about holistic care and support for people.
“We promote individual mobility and a conscious perception of the body, environment and nature,” says Pomarolli. As far as possible, everyday skills are learned or what has already been learned is practiced so that it is not “lost” again.
The individual needs of the people are always trend-setting for the offers made by the eight-strong WABE team. They are “picked up” where they are, their own interests and goals are respected, according to the team. Andreas Pichler is currently the only one whose work at WABE is intended for an external company. He is particularly proud of that. In order for Andreas Pichler to be able to carry out the necessary activities, the employees have made a special wooden stand for him so that the door stoppers and screws can be pushed more easily into the cups provided.
“Finding or inventing the right support offers often requires creativity from us. But when it works and we see people’s joy, we know why we want to do this job and not any other. Even if it is sometimes challenging, people give you a lot back personally,” says Maria Pomarolli.
Despite his impairment, it is important for Andreas Pichler to achieve something. In the WABE he gets the opportunity: “The work is good for me. I want to toil a bit.” He also proves that he likes to push his limits every day with a tight sports program with 100 sit-ups or 80-kilo cable pull training.
Volunteers welcome
In WABE and in other areas of invita there are various ways to get involved voluntarily. In the “ability-oriented activity” we are always looking for helpers who like to work creatively or with their hands. We are also currently looking for supporters for an educational project in which people with mental disabilities are to improve their basic education (e.g. reading, basic mathematics, general education, dealing with money).
