The 49-year-old prevailed in the third ballot after none of the original three candidates in the Baltic EU and NATO country had achieved an absolute majority of the 100 MPs.
Rinkevics eventually received 52 out of 87 votes cast. In July he will take up the highest state office in the Baltic Sea state bordering on Russia and Belarus with 1.9 million inhabitants. The top diplomat will then replace Egils Levits (67), who is foregoing a second term.
