The vice president of Uruguay and president of the Senate, Beatriz Argimón, called an urgent meeting with the coordinators of the benches to define the treatment of the impeachment of Gustavo Penades, after the progress of the investigation against him for the crime of sexual abuse of minors.
The white senator’s request for impeachment entered Parliament yesterday afternoon and, at the request of the person involved, it would not be dealt with in Commission but directly in plenary, in order to comply with the fast procedure that many want. Faced with this exceptional situation, Argimón called a meeting with the bank coordinators of each partywith the aim of achieving a political agreement that allows the process to be carried out as quickly as possible.
This, at least, is the intention of the National Party (NP), for whom the issue has already been sufficiently analyzed so as not to be able to proceed with the impropriety without further consideration. Gustavo Penadés, for his part, sent a letter to Argimón yesterday in which he once again insisted that his violation be dealt with quickly in plenary, without having to go through the Constitution and Legislation Commission of the Senate, as established by law.
The senator on leave is investigated for eight cases of child sexual exploitation after the first complaint by the white militant Romina Celeste; and seeks that the removal of its privileges be voted “immediately” in order to be able to make itself available to the prosecutor Ghione.
