The Accountability project will not include an increase for teachers

It was confirmed by the Minister of Education and Culture, Pablo Da Silveira, for whom “teachers in salary matters were very well treated by this government.”

The minister of Education and Culture, Pablo Da Silveirastated that the draft Accountability does not include an increase in teacher salaries since education workers “became a privileged group” in Uruguay.

Teachers in terms of salary were very well treated by this governmentbut more resources are needed,” said the minister on the Who’s Who program, when asked about the possibility that the latest Accountability Bill that can increase spending in the budget line also includes an increase in salaries of teachers in the country; also within the framework of the real wage reconstruction persecuted by the government.

According to Da Silveira, the salary “increases more than the rest of public officials”, something that teachers tend to omit. “In my ministry there are people who earn less than the teacher’s salary,” said the head of Education and Culture, adding that “the salary increase here has already been ensured gradually until the end of the government.”

It is not true that less is being spent on education. They are lame calculations. For example, teachers had one of the best salary agreements that workers across the country had,” said the Secretary of State.

The summit of presidents in Brazil and an anti-dictatorship position

Da Silveira was also consulted about the performance of the president Luis Lacalle Pou at the summit of Latin American presidents that took place in Brasilia, whose speech was marked by criticism of the government of Nicholas Ripe in Venezuela.

In this regard, the minister highlighted the participation of Lacalle Pou in the “retirement” and criticized the international policy of previous governments. “We had become a bit too timid and too accommodating towards some governments, either for fear of reprisals or out of affinity,” Da Silveira said, adding: “We are getting back in touch with our best tradition from which we had strayed.”

“When I see someone who criticizes President Lacalle Pou because he criticizes Venezuela, I remember the years of dictatorship and how good we Uruguayans felt that we were in opposition to the dictatorship when we had the support of people from another country”, recalled the minister.
