They are notorious as maypole thieves: the boys from Steinbruch near Neufelden (Rohrbach district) stole several maypoles this year, including the one from Freistadt. On Saturday, the intact loot was brought back to the district capital. As tradition demands, the “Maibaum Crew” had to appear in court. “Tough talks” had already taken place in advance with maypole donor Christoph Vevjar and a team from the ÖVP Freistadt.

The thieves received moral support from the Schuhplattler from St. Peter am Wimberg. Freistadt’s deputy mayor Christian Hennerbichler (ÖVP) swapped roles: As a civil lawyer, he took over the job of judge at the “court hearing” on the main square and, supported by a lay senate, made a not too harsh judgment: the quarry Maypole crew became face paintings and a dive condemned in the Freistadt fountain.

The thieves took the verdict upright and, much to the amusement of the guests, jumped into the well without much resistance. “It was a pleasure for us to sink the Steinbrucher maypole crew in the Freistadt fountain. Next year we will still guard our maypole better again,” said the ÖVP city party chairman Alexander Würzl.
