The 44-year-old Swiss succeeds Daniel Farke and receives a three-year contract with the German Bundesliga club. Seoane had last worked at Bayer Leverkusen and was replaced there by Xabi Alonso in early October.

In Gladbach he should now accompany and shape the upcoming upheaval.

“Gerardo Seoane has worked successfully in various positions in recent years. He is a young but experienced coach who fits our approach to football,” Gladbach’s sporting director Roland Virkus was quoted as saying in a club statement on Tuesday. As in the previous year, Gladbach finished tenth in the league.

In addition to the appointment of a new head coach, Borussia also presented a new sports director in Nils Schmadtke. The 34-year-old son of the new Liverpool sports director Jörg Schmadtke most recently worked as head of the scouting department at VfL Wolfsburg.
