Unemployment is 2.6% higher for women than for men

If compared with the data for March, the increase in female unemployment was 0.6% and consolidates an upward trend so far this year. It is that, according to the INE, Uruguay ended 2022 with a 8.6% of women without work, beginning a sustained increase up to the current situation.

In contrast, the unemployment rate among men fell by 0.2% in April, ending the month in 7.6% However, they are going through an unstable period, since in October of last year the index was 6.9%, with a peak of 8% in January 2023.

Underemployment, another problem that affects women more

In comparison, the underemployment rate among women is 10.2% and that of men is 6%, a gap of 4.2%.

Regarding the non-registration rate, both are at similar levels. Among men there was a decrease of 0.4% and the INE reflected that there is a 20.3% of unregistered males. On the other hand, among women there was a notable increase of 0.7% compared to March and left the index at 19.8% in April.

Unemployment remains high among young people in Uruguay

By disaggregating the information by age population, the report revealed that those who suffer the most from unemployment are young people from between 14 and 24 years old, with an unemployment rate of 27.4%. Despite this, the age group registered a decrease of 1.3% when compared to the March measurement.

Instead, the unemployment it increased 1.2% among people between the ages of 25 and 29, from 9.9% to 11.1%. Something similar happened with those between 30 and 34 years of age, whose index also increased 1.2%, from 6.4% to 7.6%. Different was what happened among adults between 35 and 44 years old, with a decrease of 0.4% in the unemployment rate, going from 5.3% to 4.9%.
