The Mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse, ruled out that the delay in the works of the central railway has to do with his demands and stated that “There are a lot of things to resolve” from the Ministry of Transportation, after the postponement to November of the completion of the project.

Referring to the efforts, he recalled that in March 2022 an agreement was signed with the Transportation portfolio on the works to be carried out and indicated that “In a short time it will be signed” the document to move forward. “The idea is that the train is not a problem for Montevideo, that we all win”, Cosse insisted on the work, considered key for the logistical development of the interior and the UPM plan, since it will unite Paso de los Toros and the center of Uruguay with the Montevideo port.

By focusing on what delayed the completion of the tasks, he indicated at a press conference that one of the problems was the technology used to lower the barriers. “It was changed in 2021 and the project ceased to be what it was,” warned the mayor.

To this, he added issues related to level crossings, bridges and roundabouts. “These are works that were technically defined by a very well-trained team and that were agreed upon with the Ministry,” Cosse highlighted, after which he stated: “I hope that this agreement will be signed soon.”

From the Executive they point to Cosse for the delay

However, the accusations from the Executive go against the Mayor. From the Transport Commission of the Parliament and the Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP), that heads Jose Luis Falero, They questioned Cosse’s demands and ensure that several level crossing works were not approved.

In this sense, the deputy for the National Party, Daniel Martínez, had been referred to as “blackmail” to the request of “more than 20 works that are of an important quantification” by the IM. On that occasion, he told Radio Carve that these tasks “were not foreseen” and add “a cost that the State is not willing to assume.”
