How does our diet affect the climate? How can food waste be stopped? And what do we need for conscious consumption? These and many more questions are the focus of the “Austrian Consumption Days: Food” from September 28th to 30th.
This series of discussions, organized by the “Comun” foundation, will take place in autumn for the third time, and for the first time the city of Steyr is donating the right stage. The venue is the Working World Museum, where the “Future Food” exhibition is currently being shown. Over the three days, twelve public discussions, three hands-on workshops, two exhibitions, a taste laboratory and numerous information stands and surprises are on the program. Participation is free and open to everyone.
It’s about raising awareness, it’s a socio-political forum, says Sebatsian Bohrn Mena, organizer and board member of the Comun Foundation: “The future of our food affects us all. Because we decide what producers and companies will put on the shelves in the future, what and how will be produced in the future.” Young people in particular should be won over to this topic, which is so important to them.
City boss Markus Vogl is proud to be the host of this format and a critical dialogue: “What and how we consume in the future will have a direct impact on our togetherness.” Healthy nutrition with high-quality food should not be a question of the wallet.
Food is a personal, yet highly political matter, says Environment Councilor Stefan Kaineder: “How we eat is a major factor in determining the quality of the environment, social and economic structures, climate protection and our health.”
The consumer dialogues are actively supported by the students of the HLW Steyr, who play a decisive role in the organization and implementation. The importance of this event format is also reflected in the fact that, in addition to more than 60 experts from business, science and civil society, Federal Ministers Leonore Gewessler, Norbert Totschnig and Johannes Rauch will also be taking part.
