At the same time, peanuts or traces thereof are found in numerous foods. The strict control of diet and the constant fear of a so-called anaphylactic shock (allergic shock) when accidentally eating peanut allergen burden children and parents.
A cure is not possible. Desensitization therapies are available, but only for older children and adolescents. Peanut protein patches may now reduce the long-term risk of severe allergic reactions in children under the age of four. This is shown by a study with the participation of the University Hospital Frankfurt, which was carried out at 51 locations in eight countries from 2017 to 2022. 307 small children took part in the scientific investigation.
Immunotherapy with plasters coated with peanut allergens for children aged between one and three years with peanut allergy was tried out – with success. The patches were applied between the shoulder blades once a day. They did not have to be removed for bathing or swimming.
“The results represent real progress in the treatment of small children with peanut allergy,” says Jan-Henning Klusmann, director of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at the University Hospital in Frankfurt.
