The Senate unanimously voted for the impeachment of Gustavo Penadés

Yesterday, the Constitution and Legislation Commission had reached the same result regarding the fate of the senator who had already resigned from the National Party.

The plenary session of the Uruguayan Senate voted this noon the impeachment of Gustavo Penadeswho resigned yesterday from the National Party in the midst of the investigation against him for crimes of sexual abuse and exploitation of minors.

After also voting unanimously in the Constitution and Legislation Commission the removal of their political privileges, the Chamber of Senators it decided —with some criticism in the debate but the accompaniment in the vote— the impeachment of Penadés in a session that began at 9:30; so that the senator can be duly investigated by the prosecutor for Sexual Offenses, Alicia Ghione, after receiving repeated complaints to the senator for sexual abuse.

Along with the vote of the Commission, the senator’s resignation from the National Party was also announced. Penadés extended the distance from him to the National Convention, the Departmental Convention and the International Affairs Commission, as they announced from the environment of the senator.

The senator presented his decision by means of a letter, sent to the President of the PN Board of Directors, Pablo Iturralde. There he conveyed his intention to “resign as an affiliate of said political group, as well as all the party responsibilities to which I was elected or appointed”.

This week the Board of Directors of the National Party also met where they had discussed the future of the senator, although Iturralde confirmed that the PN was not going to take any action on the possible suspension of penades until the impeachment is voted, for which reason it had been ruled out, until now, that the case be dealt with by the party’s Ethics Commission.

In this context, although there were conflicting positions, he clarified that “there were no strong discussions”, but that “cordiality” prevailed. At this point, he commented that this possibility was never touched upon. In this regard, he stated that “the request is made to investigate it, not necessarily for something else.” In any case, he admitted that “the important thing is that there are serious facts denounced”.
