In turn, the Kremlin released an official statement and mentioned the support of the Turkish president: “The presidents of Russia and Turkey exchanged views on the situation around Ukraine. Putin claimed that the Kiev authorities, instigated by his Western handlers, continue to bet dangerously on the escalation of hostilities, commit war crimes, openly use terrorist methods and organize sabotage on Russian territory.”

“A clear example of this is the barbaric act of destroying the Kakhovk hydroelectric power stationa, in the Kherson region, which caused a large-scale environmental and humanitarian catastrophe,” the text adds.

Erdogan, for his part, indicated to Putin the need to promote an “exhaustive” investigation of the attack in which Russia and Ukraine disclaimed responsibility: “President Erdogan said that it is important to carry out a thorough investigation of the explosion at the Kajovka dam so that there is no doubt”.

A spokesman for the Ukrainian emergency services told a local television channel that more than 1,450 people were evacuated from Ukrainian-controlled areas along the Dnieper riverbank after the destruction of the Kakhovka.

“There is currently no information on deaths or injuries,” said the spokesman, Oleksandr Khorunzhyiadding that the water level in the city of Kherson had risen five meters.
