The sex of the newcomer, who, according to the zoo, is well cared for by the mother, has not yet been determined. The young animal’s father is “Vladimir”, who died in February at an old age of almost 50 for orangutans. “His last ‘legacy’,” said a zoo spokeswoman in an interview.
The boy – “Vladimir’s” second offspring in Schönbrunn, “Kendari” was born almost exactly a year ago – is the first offspring for the female orangutan “Surya”, who “takes good care of it. But the first days are natural always critical. Fingers crossed that everything goes well, “said the zoo.
The dam moved from Rostock Zoo to Vienna in October 2020 as part of the European Conservation Breeding Program (EEP). “Orangutans have become a symbol for the destruction of the rainforest. They are on the brink of extinction on Borneo and Sumatra,” said the spokeswoman.
At first, “Surya” and her cub stayed in the sleeping area that was not visible. In the meantime, however, they have already made the “first trip” to the indoor facility, which is visible to visitors – so if you’re lucky, you can already see the two of them.
