No, he’s not a hero, says Josef L. modestly. “Who knows, if I hadn’t found her, then probably the next one would have followed,” says the 39-year-old. He became a first aider in the early hours of Wednesday on his way to work after a serious traffic accident on the Unteradenberg district road between Schwand im Innkreis and Überackern.
Trapped in wreck
The accident is likely to have occurred during the night hours, when exactly is unclear. The fact is that a 30-year-old from Schwand lost control of her red Skoda on the L1026 and veered off the road. The car overturned and landed on its roof below the embankment in a wooded area. The impact was so severe that she was trapped in her car and unable to call for help.

“That didn’t leave me alone”
How long she had to wait helplessly at the scene of the accident, the injured woman could not say later, says Josef L. “But it must have been a little time.” He was on his way to work at around 5 a.m. and noticed that a roadside tree was missing some bark. “That didn’t let me rest,” says the 39-year-old. In the rearview mirror he saw a flash of white – the license plate number of the car involved in the accident. Since it was slightly below the road, it was not easy to see from the road.
Josef L. drove back a bit, got out of the car and found the completely demolished vehicle of the 30-year-old below the embankment. “Her hand looked out of the window,” says Josef L. Then he acted intuitively: He spoke to the woman, who was fully conscious, well, ran up the embankment again, made an emergency call, waved to another road user brought in to secure the scene of the accident.
“Glad I Found Her”
At first he tried to pull the injured person out of the car himself, but that was too painful for the woman. “I kept talking to her and holding her hand until the emergency doctor came,” says L. But he doesn’t see himself as a lifesaver. “I’m just glad I found her,” says the 39-year-old, who volunteers with the fire department himself.

His colleagues and the emergency doctor were there quickly. The Braunau am Inn, Überackern and Hochburg fire brigades were deployed. Using hydraulic scissors, spreaders and cylinders, the injured person was carefully freed from the wreckage in a “challenging operation” according to the fire department. It took a good hour for the 30-year-old to be handed over to the rescue workers. After the first aid, she was taken to the hospital in Braunau by the emergency doctor, the police said on Wednesday. Her condition is stable.
