China rebuts UK, denies ‘secret prisons’

Beijing – China yesterday denied the existence of “secret prisons” in the United Kingdom, as denounced yesterday by the British Government, which accused the Asian giant of managing entities in its territory to persecute opponents.

“China scrupulously respects international law and the judicial sovereignty of all countries,” said Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry.

“These supposed secret police stations simply do not exist,” he insisted. He added that “China urges the British side to respect the facts, stop exaggerating things and smearing China, as well as stop putting obstacles in the way of relations” between the two countries.

The British government notified “the Chinese embassy on Tuesday that any function relating to such police stations in the UK is unacceptable” and that “they should not be operated under any circumstances”. Beijing responded yesterday that these centers do not exist.
