The Wels volunteer fire brigade recently celebrated its 160th birthday. The focus of the ceremony was Franz Humer, the former commander of the operational organization. Two months ago, after more than 20 years, Humer resigned his position in order to hand it over to his successor Roland Weber.
On the occasion of the ceremony, the former fire brigade commander was literally showered with honors. Upper Austria’s fire brigade president Robert Mayer presented him with the association’s highest award – the Great Florian Cross of Merit. Not enough of the honor, Mayor Andreas Rabl (FP) took action and presented Humer with the Gold Medal of Merit of the City of Wels, one of the city’s highest awards. The third in the dance of honor was Stadtbrandrat Heinrich Scharf from Amberg, Bavaria, who presented the former Wels fire brigade commander with the badge of honor from his city fire brigade.
Presenter Ulla Theussl led through the festive evening. She gave the fire brigade members and guests from home and abroad an entertaining insight into the history of the Wels fire brigade. Because this had started in 1863 as a gymnastics fire brigade, the celebrations took place in the gymnasium of the Wels gymnastics club on the Traun.
open-door day
The city’s population can celebrate their fire brigade on October 26th, the national holiday. On this day, the emergency organization invites you to an open day. With free admission, a varied supporting program including a musical morning pint is offered.
