The first green hydrogen project for forestry transport by the pulp company UPM will load its 17 trucks at the “hydrogenera” station.
Uruguay It will soon have the first green hydrogen station, which will work in the Centenario town, in the department of Durazno, and will supply the first project based on this clean energy, H24U, who will be in charge of forest transportation for the plant UPM and has an initial investment of 40 million dollars.

The first “hydrogen” station, which will provide 100% green hydrogen —just like the current stations provide fuel— will be installed in a short time, and will have a very important mission: supply the ambitious H24U project, which will be in charge of forest transport from the UPM plant with 17 trucks adapted to run on hydrogen, according to the specialized media Surtidores.

He Green Hydrogen Sector Fundco-organized by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM)he Technological Laboratory of Uruguay (LATU) and the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII)selected the H24U project as the winner of the open call in 2022 to choose the first user of this energy element in the country, through financing and support for its development, production and use.
The winning undertaking, carried out by the consortium made up of the companies saceem and CIR, will receive $10 million non-refundable over a period of 10 years. The group will be responsible for executing a venture that incorporates green hydrogen development and production technology; For this, a investment of 43,500,000 dollars. With the initiative, it seeks to lay the foundations to advance in one of the pillars of the second energy transition in Uruguay.
The H24U project will implement a charging system powered by green hydrogen as main energy.
In a first instance, they will adapt forest cargo transfer trucks to use the product as an energy source. Currently, these vehicles consume 28% of the demand, according to the National Energy Balance 2021and is supplied almost entirely with petroleum derivatives.
Second, it studies the possible injection of green hydrogen into the Paysandú natural gas networktogether with the company Connect. This would make it possible to evaluate the subsequent incorporation on a larger scale, to progressively decarbonise all of them.
The Green Hydrogen Sector Fund was carried out in two stages: first, a call for profiles, and then, a full presentation of commercial projects. A technical committee, made up of representatives of the academic sector, MIEM technicians and specialists in the field of Netherlands and Germany, evaluated the proposals and recommended the selected one.
