The rescue operation began around 11:30 p.m. in Wernstein am Inn when several residents on the banks of the Inn heard calls for help. The 44-year-old German was probably on his bike on the Innweg towards Passau – why he fell into the water is still unclear.
Finally, a 59-year-old came to his aid with his kayak. The helpers waiting on land wrapped the 44-year-old in blankets and looked after him until the rescue team arrived. He was then taken to the Passau Clinic.
