The balcony of the Old Town Hall in Linz is historically charged because Adolf Hitler gave his speech to the people of Linz from there in March 1938. The post-war mayors have therefore meticulously ensured that the balcony is not stepped on. Now, at the suggestion of Neos, the “reinterpretation” of the balcony should begin.
symbol of peace
In concrete terms, the balcony as a symbol of peace is to be included in the City of Linz’s declaration of peace, its history explained on the City of Linz’s website and become a topic for tourist tours. In addition, a temporary artistic visualization “peaceplease” by the artist and architect Thomas Mayrhofer will be examined. “We have agreed that merely signposting the balcony using an information board would not be sufficient. A structural adaptation is also out of the question due to the monument protection. Rather, it should be a more comprehensive, educational-political form of remembrance,” says Neos parliamentary group leader Georg Redlhammer.
After the unanimous decision in the Committee for “Economy, Innovation and Constitution”, the municipal council should follow in the next meeting.
