industrial production, without considering the Ancap refinery, fell 3.6% in April compared to the same month last year, reported today the Statistics National Institute (INE).

Among the items that advanced more convincingly, it is observed the manufacture of pharmaceuticalsthat increased almost 12% and also the manufacture of drinks with an increase of more than 10%.

The production of beverage concentrates from Pepsi in Cologne Free Zone also rose significantly, more than 16%. Production in the chemical industry also advanced 8.5% in the annual accumulated.

On the contrary, vehicle manufacturing fell 21% so far this yearafter a very good performance in 2022, Likewise, the metal-mechanic industry falls almost 24%. In the agro-industrial sector, cattle slaughter continues to be lower than last year (a fall of 18% in the accumulated). And given the drought and the arrival of winter, surely its performance will remain clearly below 2022.

The data for April was negative, although the trend of recent months reaffirms the stability in global industrial production (graphic), which is 10% above pre-pandemic levels.

Employment

Besides, the indicator of employed personnel in April fell 0.6% with respect to the same month last year and accumulates a decrease of 1.6% in the first four months of the year. The hours worked show a very similar behavior.

Recently, the Chamber of Industries (CIU) highlighted his concern about the unfair competition exercised by smuggling in the domestic market, especially in mass consumption products, mainly due to the exchange difference with Argentina.
